PLEASE NO COLOR REQUESTS.  I know everyone wants the darkest and I am very transparent with what I ship. See notes below

Everyone always asks "who lays the DARKEST Chocolate eggs.  Well, here you have it!  Not all BCM's are created equal either.  As a general rule this DUAL PURPOSE large bodies bird lays darkest of ANY breed, however, to get those really deep and rare darks it takes time, dedication and lots of patience.  The secret ingredient???  THE ROOSTER!   In order to keep breeding for those large DARK eggs you have to have a rooster who hatched from a dark egg.  That in itself takes lots of organization and time.  I label and take pictures of all my birds WITH the egg they hatched from!    If he hatched from a 5 on the color chart, no matter how dark the hen laid, off springs won't lay dark!  GENETICS play such a big role  which also includs demeanor.   Kind and gentle roosters to both hens and humans are the only ones I will use in my breeding program because that is passed down!

BCM egg color is a very controversial and often misunderstood topic.  Egg color does vary by individual bird, by the time of the year, and varies depending on their diet and management (free range on green pasture vs. confinement). Generally speaking, the eggs from these birds average around 7 with some 6 and some 8, on the French 1-9 color scale. It is unrealistic to expect every bird in your flock to lay a dark egg all year long. Egg color does not work like that. We occasionally get a 9, but it is the exception and it is usually in early spring or late fall when birds are just coming to lay.

Marans have the lowest lay rate of the breeds we raise. Some speculate that selecting for dark eggs reduces lay rate because dark eggs pass thru the oviduct more slowly receiving additional coats of color. Brown egg color is controlled by at least 14 genes and is not well understood. If it were as simple as only hatching the dark eggs, everyone would have a good line within one generation.

WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE:

You will receive 6-8's sometimes a rare 9 on the color chart.  So all shades in the darker line.  Some with speckles, some with heavy blooms giving them a purplish hue but also can make them look lighter in shade.

The pictures I show are of my eggs from all seasons showing the darkest when they first start to the lightest at the end of the season.

This breed in particular in my opinion has one of the kindest gentle giant of a rooster and the hens are the first to jump on my lap looking for a treat.

Please note BCM eggs are one of the hardest to hatch because of their dark, thick shells. I guarantee my packaging and eggs arriving safe to you but I DO NOT guarantee hatch rate.  So many variables that are out of my hand.
