Oh, these birds are something special!

I've admired the Calliope project for quite some time, and I'm SO excited to finally be working with them here at Freshly Picked Chicks!

The Calliope project was originally developed by Neumann Farms nearly a decade ago. It's a beautiful and unusual color project, best known for its striking black-and-white feather patterns.

And when I say project, I mean PROJECT! These birds are still a work in progress, and that's part of what makes them so exciting.

🐣 What Exactly Is a Calliope?

First, it's important to understand that Calliope is NOT an established breed or Ameraucana variety.

It's an ongoing color and type project, and the birds do not breed true yet.

The goal is to continue developing those gorgeous black-and-white patterns while improving consistency with each generation.

Some of the most recognizable Calliopes have beautiful black-and-white lacing that almost looks painted on!

But not every chick will look like that.

🖤 What Can You Hatch?

This is where things get interesting!

Gray or Silver Chicks with White Faces: These are the chicks showing the distinctive Calliope appearance at hatch.
Brown or Black Chicks: These may not display the desired Calliope pattern but can still carry important genetics for future generations.
Feather Patterns: Expect variation! Not every bird will develop the signature black-and-white appearance.

Please understand that specific chick colors, patterns, and percentages cannot be guaranteed.

If you're looking for a flock of identical birds, this probably isn't the project for you. But if you enjoy genetics, surprises, and watching a breeding project develop, these are SO much fun!

🥚 My Calliope Breeding Journey

I'm now in my second year working with the Calliope project, and I'm loving watching these birds develop!

There's still a LOT of work to be done! I'm continuing to hatch, grow out, evaluate, and select birds with the goal of improving those gorgeous feather patterns while maintaining beautiful blue egg color.

This is definitely not an overnight project, but that's half the fun of breeding!

Because I'm still working on developing my own flock, hatching eggs will be VERY limited.
