The Calliope Project

A legacy inspired by Neumann Farms

My Calliope Project has officially begun. It is a rare and ongoing journey that traces its roots back to Neumann Farms, where this stunning line was first developed nearly a decade ago. The Calliope is not a breed but a long-term color and type project built from a careful blend of genetics and artistry. Only a handful of breeders in the United States are currently working to preserve and refine it, making each generation a truly special achievement.

The name Calliope comes from the muse of epic poetry in Greek mythology, a fitting tribute to a project that continues to evolve, layer by layer, like a story still being written. As Mr. Neumann explains, the Calliope is not a breed, and it is not Ameraucana, not even a project variety. It is a color project still in progress that will not breed true, but it is getting closer with each generation.

Calliopes display a wide variety of feather patterns and shades, but the black and white laced birds have become the hallmark of the project—elegant, eye-catching, and instantly recognizable. When they hatch, the true Calliope chicks emerge in soft gray or silver down with distinctive white faces, while the brown and black chicks may carry the genes needed to produce future Calliopes.

Since this is a new project for me, I will be working carefully to cull, select, and hatch for the next generation. Egg production will be very limited as I focus on refinement and progress. The egg color from this line will be a beautiful blue, adding yet another layer of charm to this already captivating project.  Your best bet of getting these eggs will be in the Design-a-dozen

Each hatch reveals a new layer of refinement, and with time and patience, the project moves closer to stability, a living work of art shaped by dedication and vision.
