How to Collect a Blood Sample


How to Collect a Feather Sample

Feather samples are recommended for birds 4 months of age or older. Please make sure each feather has the intact quill/root attached, as this is where we obtain the DNA needed for testing.

For chicks and younger birds, we recommend submitting a blood sample for the most reliable DNA extraction.

Important: Molted feathers or feathers without the quill/root attached may not provide enough DNA for testing.

Can I purchase DNA tests now and use them later?
Yes! You can purchase DNA tests ahead of time and use them whenever you’re ready. Unused tests remain on your account and are marked off as you submit samples. You do not have to submit all of your samples at once.

Can I use the same sample for multiple DNA tests?
Yes. Only one sample is needed per bird, even when ordering multiple tests such as Gender, Blue Egg Gene and Recessive White.

Do you accept blood and feather samples?
Yes. Blood is always our preferred sample type and provides the most reliable source of DNA, but we also accept feather samples. Feather samples are best from birds 4 months of age or older and must have the intact quill/root attached. For chicks and younger birds, please submit a blood sample.

How quickly will I receive my results?
Results are typically completed within 24 hours of receiving your samples. Your results are delivered digitally by email.

Will you mail me a collection kit?
No collection kit is needed. Your sample collection cards, submission form and instructions are provided digitally. Simply download and print your materials, collect your samples at home and mail them directly to Freshly Picked Chicks Lab.

Can I submit samples from multiple birds at the same time?
Absolutely! You can submit samples from multiple birds together. Just make sure each bird and sample is clearly labeled  and in their own baggy so we can match each sample with the correct bird and test.

Do I have to use all of my prepaid tests at once?
No! Send a few samples now and save the rest for later. Your unused tests remain available on your account until you’re ready to use them.

Can I purchase more than one type of test for the same bird?
Yes! You can order Gender, Blue Egg Gene and Recessive White testing for the same bird, and only one properly collected sample is needed for us to perform multiple tests.
