Understanding Your Results

O/O — Two copies of the blue egg gene
Your bird is homozygous for the blue egg gene and will pass a copy of the blue egg gene to 100% of its offspring.

O/o — One copy of the blue egg gene
Your bird is heterozygous and has a 50% chance of passing the blue egg gene to each offspring.

o/o — No copies of the blue egg gene
Your bird does not carry the blue egg gene and cannot pass it to its offspring.

Blood is always our preferred sample type and provides the most reliable source of DNA. However, we also accept feather samples, which can be a convenient option when testing mature breeding birds.

Feather Samples: Birds should be 4 months of age or older. Please make sure the feathers have the intact quill/root attached, as this is where we obtain the DNA needed for testing. Molted feathers or feathers without the intact quill/root may not contain enough DNA for testing.

For blood samples, you may use:

• Our downloadable Sample Collection Card
• A clean coffee filter
• PCR tubes

Please do not use thick cardboard or perfume/fragrance test strips for blood samples.

Ordering multiple DNA tests for the same bird? Only one properly collected sample is needed. Just make sure all requested tests are clearly marked on your submission.

Optional Supplies I Use & Recommend

These supplies are not required, but they are products I personally use and recommend:

  • Nail Clippers 
  • Rubber Bands
  • Blood Clotting Powder
  • PCR Tubes  0.2ml NOT mandatory, but my preferred way to collect blood
    
    IMPORTANT: Feather samples must contain 3–5 freshly plucked feathers PER BIRD, with the quills (roots) intact. Cut feathers, naturally shed feathers, or feathers missing their quills cannot be processed. Samples that do not meet these requirements will need to be recollected and resubmitted at the customer's expense.
