Silverudd’s Blues

Looking for a breed that brings both beauty and productivity to your flock? Silverudd’s Blues are truly one-of-a-kind — the only recognized purebred chickens that lay green eggs. Originally developed in Sweden by Martin Silverudd in the mid-20th century, these birds were created with a clear purpose: consistent egg production paired with uniquely colored eggs. Today, Silverudd’s remain prized by breeders and backyard keepers alike for their rare and vibrant shades.

From mint to moss, with occasional speckles and soft matte finishes, their eggs are just as striking as the birds themselves. Silverudd’s come in three classic colors — Blue, Black, and Splash — with roosters that carry shimmering, metallic hackles. They are active foragers, friendly in temperament, and average 200–250 eggs per year, making them as practical as they are eye-catching.

My flock is tested and confirmed homozygous for the 0/0 blue-egg gene, ensuring every hen in these lines will lay a true green egg. While some Silverudd’s can lay a muddled bloom that softens the color, I breed specifically toward rich, clean green shades - but the eggs are still far from my goals.

For those working toward SOP refinement, please note: I am still perfecting certain traits such as eye color, which remains a known challenge in the breed. My personal focus is first and foremost on egg color and consistency, with secondary attention to eliminating faults over time.

Silverudd’s Blues are more than just a chicken — they’re a statement bird that brings history, color, and charm to any flock.   Some of my best olive egger crosses were made using Silverudd's!!
