Silverudd’s Blue

Looking for a breed that brings history, beauty, productivity, and incredible egg color to your flock? Silverudd’s Blue is a unique Swedish breed developed by Martin Silverudd with a focus on efficient egg production and naturally green eggs.

Their eggs can range from soft mint and sage to deeper mossy greens, sometimes with speckles or a beautiful matte finish. Mature hens typically lay medium-sized eggs around 50 grams, although individual hens and young pullets may produce smaller or larger eggs.

Silverudd’s Blues come in three classic varieties — Blue, Black, and Splash — and are active, intelligent foragers with generally friendly temperaments. They are productive layers, commonly producing approximately 200–250 eggs per year.

A Note About the Size of My Silverudd’s

Silverudd’s Blue does not currently have an approved APA Standard of Perfection in the United States. Because this is a Swedish breed, my breeding program stays closer to the traditional Swedish breed description and type, rather than selecting specifically for the larger body size sometimes seen in American lines.

The traditional Swedish description calls for approximately 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) hens and 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) roosters. Silverudd’s are naturally a relatively light-bodied, efficient laying breed. My flock is bred with these traditional Swedish size guidelines in mind, rather than selecting for the larger body size sometimes seen in American lines. Their lighter build is consistent with the type I am working to preserve and is not something I am looking to increase simply for the sake of producing a larger bird.

My flock is DNA tested and confirmed homozygous O/O for the blue-egg gene, meaning every bird carries two copies of the blue-egg gene. When combined with the breed’s brown egg-color genetics, this produces the beautiful green eggs Silverudd’s are known for.

My primary breeding focus is egg color, consistency, production, and preservation of traditional Silverudd type. I am continually working toward richer, cleaner green shades while also improving physical traits generation after generation. Certain characteristics, including eye color and other proposed-standard traits, remain works in progress within my flock.

I offer very few pure Silverudd’s Blue dozens each year. While I absolutely love the breed, one of the biggest reasons I maintain my Silverudd flock is for my Olive Egger and specialty breeding projects. Their green egg genetics have been incredibly valuable in my program, and some of my very best Olive Egger crosses have been created using Silverudd’s.

Because of this, pure Silverudd eggs are generally offered only in limited quantities when I have extras available.

If you are looking for an enormous chicken laying an enormous egg, Silverudd’s may not be the breed for you. But if you appreciate a smaller, efficient Swedish layer with fascinating genetics, beautiful BBS plumage, and naturally green eggs, they are pretty hard to beat.
